Camomile Tea
by Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)
Outside the sky is light with stars;
There's a hollow roaring from the sea.
And, alas! for the little almond flowers,
The wind is shaking the almond tree.
How little I thought, a year ago,
In the horrible cottage upon the Lee
That he and I should be sitting so
And sipping a cup of camomile tea.

You are the most beautiful person I have ever met.
You are an open book, a happy puppy, a good person.
You have no idea I love you, but I do - with my entire heart.
When you smile, I melt.
When you talk to me, I'm a tongue-tied idiot.
I hope you find the life you need and attain all the happiness you deserve.
I miss you.

The longing grew within my heart until
it seemed that I would be consumed. It ate
away at all I was, 'til worm and bone
were all I was. My heart grew cold and still
as every flame of passion did abate,
wherefore I wandered through the dark alone.
Your light pierced dark, your warmth began to kill
the cold, your gentle hands removed the weight
of shadow, and I saw a face unknown.
Your face. Your eyes, your smile, with love did fill
my heart. I knew that with you lay my fate,
I asked you then if you would be my own.
You pledged yourself to be forever mine,
and I myself to be forever thine.

Maybe i'm just scared or confused.
I'm chicken shit when it comes to commitment.
I'm trying, believe me but i'm too afraid to open my heart.
I'm scared of getting hurt.
You saved me.
You became my confidante, my companion.
I have always loved you and i think the feeling is mutual
I want us to be more.
But i can't let go of what we are.
I'm scared of what we'll be
When everything falls apart,
Will you still be here for me?
Will we go back to the way we were?
Will you still save me?
Will you still love me?

The month was August
1986 was the year
A bitch gave birth to her puppies
Each one to be loved so dear
We adopted one of those puppies
The smallest of the lot
Shetland Sheepdog – Sheltie for short
He was like a little dot
We christened him Jamie
That cute little bundle of fluff
He was very ill, but he fought it off
For a little ‘un – he was tough
“Animals are dumb”
So the saying goes
But Jamie is intelligent
From his nose down to his toes
He really is a softy
He rolls over on the mat
But he lets the canine side down
For his best friend is a cat!
He’s one of the family and we love him
But at times he is a pest
Here’s a message in human talk
“As dogs go – Jamie you are the best!”

Friends are now just names in my mailbox
I don’t feel them around me
There are no hands to hold
Or shoulders to pat on
Only some memories old
That refuse to die down
It’s sad to feel lonely at times
In this quarter of a billion city
Is this a start or is this an end
Or is this life's nitty-gritty?
Gone are the days when the sun was gold
And the stars were brighter than ever
And onto the grass we ran and rolled
And giggled when tickled with feather

*Amatory Idylls*
I
Heather of breath; velvet of eyelashes that fly up like a flush of birds. Your indigo eye is dusky and tender. Only a beloved one has the eyes like yours. Our argument in the ringing silence--crystal notes and echoes drop one by one to ease the tension. Can you see the glow? You thought it went out? Only along with me. Patina and calx of time never cover passion in the mirrors of the mind, lucid like ice in an amethyst mere. Babe, when you are away, like a blind man I wander in dark. Do you … me? “No!” The fear again. The almond of bittersweet lips--crossing glances; our merged faces--trembling eyelashes like a velvet curtain.

Jasper’s Poem - (If a dog could talk)
I love you in the morning
When you take me for a walk.
Even when you stand around
With people, when you all talk!
I love you in the afternoon
When you give me my first meal.
And even though its beef, or lamb
I don’t want you to buy me veal!
I love you in the evening
When we lounge and watch TV.
You in your armchair, me on the sofa
Casualty – who cares, as long as you’re with me.
