If I could say everything I want to, I would say this:

It feels like you’ve always been there, but I didn’t know it. Like a riptide, you were a strong force underneath the surface, but I didn’t see you before. I swam innocently out to sea and you caught me, and now I can’t get out.

I told you how I feel, which is the bravest thing I’ve done in quite some time, seeing as I was pretty sure you didn’t return my affections (a suspicion you confirmed). I prepared myself for rejection, but somehow I still feel so… sad.

All of the sensible people told me to forget about it, and that I can do better. I suppose they’re right, but I think even if I stopped talking to you, I know that I would always compare everyone to you, and they wouldn’t measure up.

I’ll just tell the sensible people that I’m focusing on other things, and act like my affection is slowly fading if you ever do speak to me again.

But underneath, I’ll be a riptide.
