Dear Savannah,
It is the middle of the night here and I am looking at the moon, knowing that far away you are looking towards that same full bright glow and thinking of our room with the leaky roof, and my arms wrapping you in a warm cocoon. Being here is difficult because I know I won’t be able to feel the touch of your lips crushing mine for a long time.
While I was dying, I was not thinking about the pain, or the war that I was fighting, but you and how a week before you announced your pregnancy over the phone. It has been a year since then, and from my seat in heaven, I can see that little Holden is growing up faster than ever. He has your eyes, and I am honored that you named our miracle after me. It gets harder and harder to spend each day without your touch but I can feel your love from up here. Give Holden all my love, and make sure he is proud that his father served in the army and does not hate me for never being there for him. I love you Savannah!
